This exception to << prathamayoHp... makes <17 AdguNaH and <16 vRddhireci reappear.

**phala- फलॱ n + /au
→ phala- फलॱ + /zI
→ **phale फले, by <17 AdguNaH, not << prathamayoHp....

**azvA- अश्वाॱ f + /au
→ azvA- अश्वाॱ + /zI by auGa::ApaH
→ **azve' अश्वेऽ "two mares", by <17 AdguNaH

**azva- अश्वॱ m + /au
→ !**azvau अश्वौ "two horses", with <16 vRddhireci, not << prathamayoHp....

/tad- m + /au
→ !**tau तौ m "they two"

/tad- f + /au
→ !**te' तेऽ f "they two"

/tad- n + /au
→ !**tAni तानि n "they two"

There are exceptions to this rule in the /veda, so don't panic if the veda sings ubhA उभा (with << prathamayoHp... applied to ubha उभ + /au) when you expect **ubhau उभौ.
