(After a neuter), replace /jas /zas with /zi.
This "zi" has short i इ, unlike /zI.
The z श् label makes it replace the whole of /jas or /zas, by anekAlzits....
Example with the greendog base bahupur- बहुपुर् "that has many cities" —
bahupur- बहुपुर् n + /jas OR /zas
→ bahupur- बहुपुर् + /zi by this rule
→ !**bahupuri बहुपुरि " s o (things) that have many cities"
As /zi is strong (by zisarvanAm...), it makes the nexttolast of many stems lenghten, or get /num, or both. Here we have both —
manas- मनस् n + /zi → **manAMsi मनांसि "minds"
Vowel-enders too get both lengthening and /num —
phala- फलॱ n + /jas OR /zas
→ phala- फलॱ + /zi by this rule
→ phalan- फलन् + /zi by napuMsakasy...
→ phalAn- फलान् + /zi by sarvanAmasth...
→ !**phalAni फलानि "results", "fruits"
**madhu- मधुॱ n + /zi → **madhUni मधूनि
**dadhi- दधिॱ n + /zi → **dadhIni दधीनि
**mRdu- मृदुॱ n + /zi → **mRdUni मृदूनि
**zuci- शुचिॱ n + /zi → **zucIni शुचीनि
**dhAtR- धातृॱ n + /zi → **dhAtRRNi धातॄणि
The n न्-enders don't get /num —
nAman- नामन् n + /zi → **nAmAni नामानि "names"
Why "neuter"?
**vidyut- विद्युत् f + /jas or /zas → **vidyutas विद्युतस् "lightnings"
**suhRd- सुहृद् mf + /jas or /zas → !**suhRdas सुहृदस् "friends"
The spelling of this rule looks weird. May I spell this rule as "jaHzasoHziH", with jaH जः?
Sure, go ahead. jaH जः is fine too. Just remember to SAY jazzasozzI. Not jaHazasoHozi. Regardless of how you spell. See vAzari.
But, why does my book spell it with z श्z श्?
Just to remind you that this is the /jas affix, not the letter jaH जः (the j ज्).
