तदस्यास्त्यस्मिन्निति मतुप् ONPANINI 52094

The affix matup (comes after a word with first ending) in the sense of "he has it" or "there is in it".

formation

hanuH हनुः "jaw" + /matup
hanu- हनुॱ + /matup by supodhAtupr...
→ **hanumat- हनुमत् m "Jaws" (a nickname for someone that has a broken jaw)

gAvaH गावः + /matup
go- गोॱ + /matup by supodhAtupr...
!**gomat- गोमत् (meaning who has cows (cattleowner), or a place in which there are cows (cattle ranch))

In some circumstancs, /matup becomes /vatup.

/sup adding

As "matup" is /udit, it becomes mant मन्त् before strong, and before strong /su the a lengthens —

**hanumat- हनुमत् m + /su → **hanumAn हनुमान्

**gomat- गोमत् m + /am → **gomantam गोमन्तम्

**gomat- गोमत् n + /su OR /am!**gomat गोमत्, by halGyAbbhyodIrgh...

meaning

This sUtra teaches that when we form **gomat- गोमत् m from gAvaH गावः, the basic meaning is yasya gAvas santi यस्य गावः सन्ति "(he who) has cows" or yasmin gAvas santi यस्मिन्गावः सन्ति "(that which) has cows in it".

However, those are not the EXACT meanings. To JUST say that devadatta has cows, or that there are cows in the field, you MUST say —

devadattasya gAvaH देवदत्तस्य गावः

kSetre gAvaH क्षेत्रे गावः

you may not say gomAn devadattaH गोमान्देवदत्तः, gomat kSetram गोमत्क्षेत्रम् in that plain sense. However, you may use **gomat- गोमत् as a descriptive in several special senses —

gomAn devadattaH गोमान्देवदत्तः "D. has lots of cows", "D. is rich", "D. is a cattleowner"

gomat kSetram गोमत्क्षेत्रम् "the field is full of cows", "this is a cattle ranch".

More examples —

pakSa- पक्षॱ + /matup!**pakSavat- पक्षवत् "winged, that has a wing or wings in it"

pakSavantaz zakunayaH पक्षवन्तः शकुनयः "birds have wings"
