vid विद् + /laT
→ vid विद् + /zatR by laTazzatRz...
→ vid विद् + /vasu by this rule
→ **vidvas- विद्वस् mfn "who knows", which is /udit

ITA —

vid विद् + /laT
→ vid विद् + /zatR by laTazzatRz... → !**vidat- विदत् "who knows", which is /Rdit

This /vasu only replaces /zatR after the /vid meaning /vetti, but not after the other four vid विद् in the /dhAtupATha.

Strictly speaking, this rule allows the nounbase **vidvas- विद्वस् only when rules laTazzatRz... ff allow **vidat- विदत्, and only when the meaning is "one that knows", in cases like —

chando vidvAMsan tam pazyAmi छन्दो विद्वांसं तं पश्यामि "I see that he knows the Veda"

Yet, even of this sUtra does not say so, **vidvas- विद्वस् can, as well, be used anywhere to mean a sage or learned man.
