You are cheating again ... The other translators say this rule is optional! It clearly starts with /vA.

Well yes... technically, it is optional. But as far as the practical applications are concerned, we might as well say that it is compulsory.

See. Reading the /pANini rules literally, there is an option in pronunciation. You may freely choose if you want to pronounce madhUliD मधूलिड् or madhuliT मधुलिट् before a pause. This MIGHT mean that in /pANini time, people pronounced this word in two different ways. Or not. We don't know, and there are serious reasons to doubt that.

Anyway, nowadays people don't pronounce this word in two different ways. It is always pronounced the same way. Modern Sanskrit does not seem to have a final D ड् sound that sounds any different form a final T ट् sound.

Also, as far as the spelling is concerned, there is no optionality either. When before a pause, the word is invariably spelled madhuliT मधुलिट्.

My personal opinion is that we should take the vA वा in the sUtra to mean "spell madhuliD मधुलिड् or madhuliT मधुलिट् as you wish, both ways are okay, and don't waste time arguing if that sound is a D ड् or a T ट्, the difference just does not matter".

But in my language the words "hit" and "hid" sound clearly different.

In yours, that's true. In Sanskrit, however, suhRd सुहृद् and pustakabhRt पुस्तकभृत् clearly rhyme. Might as well spell them as suhRt सुहृत् and pustakabhRd पुस्तकभृद्. Makes no difference.
