(But when /sic disappears, /jhi turns into /jus) only after A आ.
Exception to < sijabhyastav....
So three things can happen to /luG /jhi —
(A) Ordinarily, there will be /sic and the /jhi will become /jus by < sijabhyastav....
(B) However, when rules gAtisthAghup... ff eat up the /sic, usually jhontaH will make /ant'''.
(C) Except when the root ends in A आ, then we get /jus again, as in —
dhA धा + /luG /jhi
→ **adhA- अधाॱ + /jhi
→ adhA- अधाॱ + /jus by this rule
→ adh- अध् + us उस् by usyapadAntAt
→ !**adhus अधुस् "they just put"
dA दा + /luG /jhi → **adA- अदाॱ + /jhi → adA- अदाॱ + /jus → ad- अद् + /jus by usyapadAntAt → !**adus अदुस् "they just gave"
pA पा + /luG /jhi
→ **apA- अपाॱ + /jus
→ !**apus अपुस् "they just drank"
But when the root does not end in A आ, and there is no /sic, jhontaH makes /ant''' —
bhU भू + /luG /jhi
→ **abhU- अभूॱ + /luG /jhi
→ **abhUvan अभूवन्
This is a /niyama rule.
By the previous rule, /jhi should turn into /jus also when /sic disappears by gAtisthAghup... ff (by pratyayalop..., the power of /sic stays). This exception says that in that case, /jhi only turns into /jus if the /luG stem ends in A आ —
