/Davatup / डवतुप्

Davatup is a variant of /matup that replaces the /Ti of the base with a

bhA भा + /Davatup
bh भ् + avat अवत्u, losing A by TeH
!**bhavat'- भवत्ऽॱ "your honor"

**bhavat'- भवत्ऽॱ m + /su → **bhavAn भवान्

**bhavat'- भवत्ऽॱ f → **bhavat- भवत् + /GI!**bhavatI- भवतीॱ "your ladyship"

Grammarians like to make bhavAn भवान् come from the root bhA भा "brilliance, shine", thus making it mean "your brilliance".

These words make the verb take third person endings, like English "your honour" —

Asitum arhati bhavAn आसितुमर्हति भवान् "your honor should sit"

Unlike English "your honour", however, they are used between equals in social standing. They are so common that in some styles of spoken sanskrit, /yuSmad- is seldom used.

The word bhagavat- भगवत् m means God sometimes.
