/GI / ङी

/GI is the common name of the feminine affixes /GIS, /GIp and GIn ङीन्.

(This /GI has long-I — Don't mix it up with the short-i /Gi meaning "in".)

The feminine affixes are added after most nounbases when they are feminine.

Example 1.

When the nounbase mayura- मयुरॱ m "peacock, peafowl" describes a female, it gets /GIS by jAterastrIv...

**mayUra- मयूरॱ m "peacock" + /GI → **mayUrI- मयूरीॱ f "peahen"

Example 2.

When the nounbase rAjan- राजन् m "king" describes a female, it gets /GIp by RnnebhyoGIp

rAjan- राजन् "king" m + /GI
rAjn- राज्न् + I by alloponaH
rAjJ- राज्ञ् + I- ईॱ by stozzcunAzcuH
→ **rAjJI- राज्ञीॱ f "queen", "wife of king"

Counterexamples —

Base azva- अश्वॱ gets /Ap by ajAdyataSTAp, so it does not get /GI

**azva- अश्वॱ m "horse, stallion" + /GI → **azvA- अश्वाॱ f "mare"

Base pustakabhRt- पुस्तकभृत् does not get any feminine affix, because no sUtra enjoins any —

sarasvatI pustakabhRt सरस्वती पुस्तकभृत् "Sarasvatii the book-carrieress"
