(A n न् that is not before a serious turns into N ण्) even when several of /aT' /ku /pu /AG /M come in between.
Addition to < raSAbhyAnnoN....
According to < raSAbhyAnnoN..., n न् turns into N ण् when it is right after r र् —
tIr तीर् + na न → tIrNa- तीर्णॱ , by < raSAbhyAnnoN...
This rule says that the same thing will happen if there is an /aT' between the r र् and the n न् —
putra पुत्र + /TA
→ putra पुत्र + ina इन by TAGasiGas...
→ putrena पुत्रेन by AdguNaH
→ !**putreNa पुत्रेण by this rule
and the same thing will happen if two /aT' come in between —
**kArya- कार्यॱ + /TA
→ kAryena कार्येन
→ !**kAryeNa कार्येण
and of course it will also happen when we have in between an /aT', a /pu, another /aT', another /pu, and another /aT' —
niSkramamAnaH निष्क्रममानः → !**niSkramamANaH निष्क्रममाणः
Coulson at the end of chapter four has a wonderful explanation of why this happens, but I would hate to deprive his heirs of their copyrightful income by explaining it again here.
What does the num नुम् in the sUtra mean?
Oddly, it means any /anusvAra. It does not mean the augment /num.
So, the /M here does not stop /Natvam —
bRh बृह् + Ana आन → bRMhANa- बृंहाणॱ "making better", "amelioration", "embiggenment"
Strictly speaking, the sUtra should be aT;ku;pv;AG;anusvAra;vyavAye'pi अट्कुॱप्वाङनुस्वारॱव्यवायेऽपि. /pANini sometimes does confusing things to make the sUtras ASHAP.
Why is /AG mentioned in the sUtra? After all, /AG is a vowel, the term /aT' should include it.
/AG is a /pada too, so it should ordinarily stop /Natvam effects across it. Its mention here shows that it doesn't —
/pari + /AG + naddha- नद्धॱ → !**paryANaddha- पर्याणद्धॱ "covered"
nah नह् + /kta → **naddha- नद्धॱ "tied"
