Shorten a nounbase when neuter.
zrIpA- श्रीपाॱ n + /su
→ zrIpa- श्रीपॱ n + /su by this rule
→ zrIpa- श्रीपॱ n + /am by atom
→ bahugrAmaNi- बहुग्रामणिॱ when neuter by this rule
→ !**bahugrAmaNi- बहुग्रामणिॱ n
atirai- अतिरैॱ mfn "super-rich"
→ !**atiri- अतिरिॱ when neuter, by eca::igghrasv...
Why does this sUtra bother to use the word "nounbase"?
Because neuter nouns ending in a long are not shortened. Only nounbases are, and only before the /sup is added. So two fruits are **phale फले, not phali फलि.
