A /samAsa, and whatever ends in a /kRt or a /taddhita, are nounbases.
According to < arthavadadh..., anything that has a meaning, is not a verb root, and has no affix is a nounbase. That definition was too restrictive; it made azva- अश्वॱ "horse" into a nounbase, but not kartR- कर्तृॱ (which has the affix /tRc) or yudhiSThira- युधिष्ठिरॱ (whic has the affix /Gi in the very middle). But according to this sUtra, we also get a nounbase when we —
(1) join a root रोओत् and a /kRt that is not a tense or a verbmaker affix —
root kR कृ "make"
+ /kRt affix /tRc
→ nounbase **kartR- कर्तृॱ "maker"
As आस् + some /kRt → Asana- आसनॱ n "seat", "way of sitting"
(2) join a noun and a /taddhita —
noun upagos उपगोस् "upagu's" + /iJ "descendant" → nounbase **aupagava- औपगवॱ "descendant of upagu"
(3) join a noun and a nounbase —
noun rAjJas राज्ञस् "king's" + base puruSa- पुरुषॱ "man" → nounbase rAjapuruSa- राजपुरुषॱ "kingman", "policeman"
These rules apply recursively, so aupagavapura- औपगवपुरॱ n "city of aupagava" and rAjapuruSazirastra- राजपुरुषशिरस्त्रॱ n "cop hat" are nounbases too.
