/strI- and /pums get naJ नञ् /snaJ in the senses taught up to 52001 dhAnyAnAmbhav....

So, according to <<<< prAgdIvyatoN and other rules, /aN'' after strI- स्त्रीॱ may give the sense strINAM samUhaH स्त्रीणां समूहः "group of women". But by this exception we get naJ नञ् instead —

/strI- + /naJ
→ strai- स्त्रैॱ + /naJ with /vRddhi by taddhiteSvac...
→ !**straiNa- स्त्रैणॱ with /Natvam.

To mean pumbhyo hitam पुम्भ्यो हितम् "suitable for men", rule tasmaihitam prescribes /cha, but by this exception /pums gets /snaJ instead —

pums- पुम्स् + /snaJ
→ paums पौम्स् + sna स्न with /vRddhi by taddhiteSvac...
→ paum पौम् + sna स्न by saMyogAntasy..., because pums पुम्स् is /pada by svAdiSvasarv...
→ !**pauMsna- पौंस्नॱ by monusvAraH.

(This naJ नञ् /taddhita is not the same /naJ that appears ibc in compounds like anRtam अनृतम्.)
