(Merge) padafinal e ए o ओ with a अ (into e ए o ओ).
Exception to ecoyavAyAvaH.
**udyAne उद्याने + **atra अत्र → !**udyAnetra उद्यानेत्र "in this garden"
viSNo विष्णो + ava अव → vISNova वीष्णोव "go away, viSNu विष्णु!"
azvas अश्वस् + atra अत्र → azvo अश्वो + atra अत्र → **azvotra अश्वोत्र
te ते + api अपि → !**tepi तेपि "they too"
It is a good idea for beginners to always write an /avagraha symbol where the a अ used to be:
udyAne 'tra उद्याने ऽत्र
viSNo 'va विष्णो ऽव
azvo 'tra अश्वो ऽत्र
te 'pi ते ऽपि
What does the /avagraha symbol mean?
It means "there used to be an a अ here, but rule this rule ate it up".
Why do we say "padafinal"?
When not padafinal, ecoyavAyAvaH will apply instead —
ne ने + a अ + ti ति → **nayati नयति
/go- + /Am → **gavAm गवाम्
Why do we say "e ए o ओ"?
ecoyavAyAvaH works normally after ai ऐ au औ before all vowels —
/nau'' + avatu अवतु → !**nAvavatu नाववतु
tasmai तस्मै + akSipat अक्षिपत्
→ tasmAyaksipat तस्मायक्सिपत् by ecoyavAyAvaH
→ !**tasmA::aksipat तस्माअक्सिपत् by lopazzAkaly...
Why do we say "before a अ"?
Before other vowels, ecoyavAyAvaH will work normally —
vAyo वायो + iti इति → vAyaviti वायविति
sarve सर्वे + eva एव
→ sarvay eva सर्वयेव by ecoyavAyAvaH
→ !**sarva::eva सर्वएव optionally by lopazzAkaly...
Wait, why didn't **nAvavatu नाववतु above get lopazzAkaly...?
IDK, really. In the /pANini system rule lopazzAkaly... is optional. Yet if you trust printed books, it appears to be compulsory after av अव् ay अय् Ay आय् and forbidden after Av आव् —
oM saha nAv avatu ओं सह नाववतु — never nA::avatu नाअवतु.
sarva::eva सर्वएव — never sarvayeva सर्वयेव
Why doesn't sUtra ubhe::abhyast... show the effects of this rule?
Because of the exception IdUdeddviv... —
azve:: atra अश्वे अत्र "two mares are here"
ubhe:: उभे abhyastam "both together are called /abhyasta"
pacyete:: adya पच्येते अद्य "both are being cooked today"
