When there is /lup, gender and number are like the original.
Rule pratyayasyal... says that /lup is a sort of affix-/lopa.
Starting with the plural noun vaGgAH वङ्गाः "the Vangas people", and adding some /taddhita, we can build a word meaning "the country of the Vangas" because of some rule. Then, that /taddhita is replaced with /lup by janapadelup. So the resulting word keeps the m gender and plural number:
vaGgAs वङ्गास् (m. plural) "the Vangas people" + /aN''
→ vaGgAs वङ्गास् + /lup by janapadelup
→ vaGgAs वङ्गास् (m. plural) "the Vangas country"
However, when from lavaNam लवणम् n "salt" we form a word meaning "salted" by lavaNAlluk, the /taddhita is replaced with /luk, not /lup, by another rule. So our new word will be a descriptive. It will not keep the number or gender of the original lavaNam लवणम्, but will copy those of whatever it linksto —
lavaNas sUpaH लवणः सूपः "salted sauce"
lavaNAs sUpAH लवणाः सूपाः "salted sauces"
So this rule might also be translated as —
/lup makes non-adjectives.
Or even as "the /luk of a /taddhita makes an adjective".
Wait, what does vyakti;vacane व्यक्तिॱवचने mean?
"Gender and number". /vyakti means gender, and /vacana means number.
