The root yuj युज् means "yoke" or "join". Also "to become one with everything".
Before the /zap tenses, rule rudhAdibhyazzn... turns yuj युज् into **yunaj- युनज्, which in turn becomes —
**yuGk- युङ्क् or **yuGg- युङ्ग्
The a अ stays before /pit affixes, as in **ayunajam अयुनजम् and **yunajmi युनज्मि, but gets lost by znasorallopaH before /apit —
**yunaj- युनज् (before /apit)
→ yunj- युन्ज् by znasorallopaH
→ yuJj- युंज् by nazcApadAnt...
→ !**yuJj- युञ्ज् by anusvArasy...
as in **yuJjanti युञ्जन्ति and **yuJjat- युञ्जत् (the /zatR).
In either case, when the /tiG starts with a serious, coHkuH does its business as usual —
yuj युज् + /znam (before serious /apit)
→ **yunaj- युनज्
→ yunj- युन्ज् by znasorallopaH
→ yung- युन्ग् by coHkuH
→ yuGk युंक् by nazcApadAnt...
→ !**yuGg- युङ्ग् by anusvArasy...
and if the serious is a /khar —
**yuGg- युङ्ग्
→ !**yuGk- युङ्क् by kharica
as in **yuGktas युङ्क्तस् and **yuGkte युङ्क्ते.
But before a /pit the a अ stays —
yuj युज् + /znam (before serious /pit)
→ **yunaj- युनज्
→ yunag- युनग् by coHkuH
→ !**yunak- युनक् by kharica
as in **yunakti युनक्ति and **yunakSi युनक्षि.
