rudhAdibhyaz znam

रुधादिभ्यः श्नम् ONPANINI 31078

The /rudhAdi get /znam (instead of /zap).

That is to say, before a hard that shows the doer.

The /rudhAdi roots are the verb class seven.

As "znam" is a /mit, midacontyAtp... applies —

chid छिद् + /znam!**chinad- छिनद्

yuj युज् + /znam!**yunaj- युनज्

rudh रुध् + /znam!**runadh- रुनध्

The a of that na only stays before /pit endings —

rudh रुध् + /laT /tip
→ **runadh- रुनध् + /laT /tip
→ **ruNaddhi रुणद्धि "obstructs"

yuj युज् + /laG /mip → **ayunajam अयुनजम् "I joined"

rudh रुध् + /laG /mip → **aruNadham अरुणधम् "I obstructed"

because, when the /tiG is /apit, rule znasorallopaH erases that a

**runadh- रुनध् + /laT /mas
→ **rundh- रुन्ध् + /mas by znasorallopaH
→ **rundhmas रुन्ध्मस् "we obstruct"

**bhinad- भिनद् + /te'''
→ **bhind- भिन्द् + /te''' by znasorallopaH
→ **bhintte भिन्त्ते "splits"

See some rudhAdi verbs for more examples.

This "znam" is a /zit. What for?

If it were not /zit, it would be soft and cause gbS of the root.

I have a doubt. Does this rule debar the adding of /zap and adds /znam in its place, or does this rule replace /zap with /znam, just like adiprabhRt... replaces /zap with /luk?

The former.

Are you sure?

Very sure. A /zap replaced with /znam would be still /pit and cause gbH of the root.
