So when adding the soft /tRc —

paTh पठ् + /tRc allowed by NvultRcau
→ paTh पठ् + ( i इ + tRc तृच् ) by ArdhadhAtuk...

Now i इ is in front of a soft so it should take guNa by sArvadhAtuk..., but this rule prevents that, and we get

→ !**paThitR- पठितृॱ "chanter"

Don't worry about the roots dIdhI दीधी "shine" and vevI वेवी "go", because those two are found mainly in the vedas, where they get /guNa anyway when they feel like it by special dispensation. If /pANini had known that these two were going to go out of use, the sUtra would be just "iTaH इटः".
