/NiG comes after kami कमि without change of meaning.
kamer dhAtoH NiG pratyayo bhavati कमेर्धातोः णिङ्प्रत्ययो भवति. NakAro vRddhyarthaH णकारो वृद्ध्यर्थः. GakAra AtmanepadArthaH ङकार आत्मनेपदार्थः. kAmayate कामयते, kAmayete कामयेते, kAmayante कामयन्ते.
The /Nit in "NiG" causes /vRddhi, and the /Git makes the verb /AtmanepadI.

Is this /Ni compulsory after kam कम्?
Sure is. Rule AyAdaya::... > makes /NiG optional before soft, but /zap is hard. So *kamati कमति is forbidden. MMW p. 252 says "not used in the conjugational tenses".
