(If /tAs is /aniT after a root) that has a in the /dhAtupATha, (then so is /thal).

So, as pac पच् makes pac पच् + /tAspaktAs- पक्तास् before /luT, we get —

pac पच् + /liT /sip
pac पच् + /thal
→ **papac- पपच् + /thal
→ **papaktha पपक्थ

Why "in the /dhAtupATha"?

When dRz दृश् gets /guNa becoming darz दर्श्, that a does not count, so we get —

dRz दृश्!**dadarzitha ददर्शिथ "you'' saw" ← /iT is compulsory here

with compulsory /iT even though dRz दृश् + /luT /tip → **draSTA' द्रष्टाऽ has no /iT.

Also, kR कृ + /luT makes **kartA' कर्ताऽ with no /iT, but that a does not trigger this rule. So we get cakartha चकर्थ, but not by this rule.

By what rule, then?

By kRsRbhRvRst....

What's that word atvatas अत्वतस् in the sUtra?

at अत्, meaning "short a" (by taparastatk...), plus /matup, plus /Gasi, makes atvatas अत्वतस् "after whatever has short a".

The a won't be at the end of the root, because there are no a -enders in the /dhAtupATha.
