The following sUtras, before NvultRcau, describe the /kRtya affixes.
The /kRtya affixes are:
/tavya /tavyat /anIyar /kelimar /yat' /Nyat /kyap
These are /kRt affixes (means, added after roots).
The word kRtya- कृत्यॱ means "it has to / must / should / would / could / can be done". The /kRtya affixes give those meanings to any root —
kR कृ "do" + /Nyat → **kArya- कार्यॱ "that must be done", "(it) must be done"
kR कृ "do" + /tavya → **kartavya- कर्तव्यॱ "that must be done", "(it) must be done"
These words never show the doer.
They can be used as fakeverbs, namely, predicatively as the main word of a sentence —
kartavyam idaG karma ghoram कर्तव्यमिदं कर्म घोरम् "this terrible deed must be done"
or attributively —
kartavyaG karma karomy aham कर्तव्यं कर्म करोम्यहम् "I shall do the work that must be done".
