Lengthen the stem of soft non-/kRt (/kGit affixes that start with y य्).

Which is, afaik, the same thing as saying —

Lengthen the stem of /kyaG, /yak, soft /yAsuT, and /yaG.

shorten akRt page

Examples before /kyaG

**bhRzam भृशम् + /kyaG (allowed by bhRzAdibhyobh...)
bhRza- भृशॱ + /kyaG by supodhAtupr...
bhRzA- भृशाॱ + /kyaG by this rule
→ **bhRzAyate भृशायते "becomes important", adding /laT /ta

sukham सुखम् + /kyaG (allowed by sukhAdibhyazca)
!**sukhAyate सुखायते "feels happy", adding /laT /ta

Examples before /yak

zru श्रु + /yak + /laT /ta → **zrUyate श्रूयते "it is heard"

ci चि + /yak + /laT /ta!**cIyate चीयते

stu स्तु + /yak + /laT /ta!**stUyate स्तूयते

Examples before soft /yAsuT

ci चि + soft liG /tip
ci चि + **yAt' यात्ऽ, and this yAt' यात्ऽ is a soft /Git non-/kRt
cI ची + **yAt' यात्ऽ by this rule
!**cIyAt चीयात् "may he heap up"

Examples before /yaG

ci चि + /yaG + /laT /ta!**cecIyate चेचीयते "heaps up a lot"

Why is this **yAt' यात्ऽ a /Git?

Because yAsuTparasm... says so.

Why non-/kRt?

Afi, hR हृ is unaffected before the /kRt affix /lyap

/pra + hR हृ + /ktvA
/pra + hR हृ + /lyap
/pra + hRt हृत् + ya by hrasvasyapit...
!**prahRtya प्रहृत्य

Why do we say "before a soft"?

No lengthening before hard /yAsuT

ci चि + hard liG /tip!**cinuyAt चिनुयात् "would gather", with hard **yAt यात्

!**sunuyAt सुनुयात् "would squeeze"

Why /kGit?

In the veda, instead of uruNA उरुणा and dhRSNunA धृष्णुना, we have sometimes —

!**uruyA उरुया

!**dhRSNuyA धृष्णुया

with yA या by supAMsulukp..., which is not /kGit.
