The replacement of a vowel becomes vowel-like when what is after it causes a change in what is before it.

Example.

When adding /Nic after the nounbase paTu- पटुॱ "skilful" to make a denominative, ordinarily the u उ would be replaced with /lopa by !! , which means, the u उ would be erased and forgotten about. However, because of this sUtra, this null replacement turns into a vowel-like ghost affix —

paTu- पटुॱ + /Nic
→ (paT पट् + ghost vowel) + /Nic

Thanks to this ghost u उ, a अ is no longer the nexttolast of the stem of /Nic. Where it not for this rule, the a अ would be the nexttolast of paT पट्, and then ata::upadh... would lengthen the a अ. But because of this rule, there is no lengthening —

paTu- पटुॱ + /Nic
→ (paT पट् + ghost vowel) + /Nic
→ !**paTi पटि denominative root,

**paTi पटि + /laT /tip → !**paTayati पटयति

But when we add causative /Nic to the true root paT पट्, meaning, "it bursts", there is no ghost vowel, so the a अ is a nexttolast, and ata::upadh... does apply —

paT पट् + /Nic + /laT /tip
pATi पाटि + /zap + /tip
→ !**pATayati पाटयति "he makes it burst"

Similarly, when forming
