Erase the final a अ of a stem before soft.

Before hard affixes, many stems end in a अ (see /zap, /zyan, /za, /sya, /yak... for examples), but a अ-enders before soft are seldom. Some examples:

/san roots like **cikIrSa चिकीर्ष,

denominative roots like katha कथ or kama कम,

rarities like the dhina धिन and kRNa कृण made by dhinvikRNvyor...,

and the vadha वध root that replaces /han by hanovadhaliGi.

**cikIrSa चिकीर्ष + /tumun → cikIrSitum चिकीर्षितुम्

**yuyutsa युयुत्स + /u' → **yuyutsu- युयुत्सुॱ

In dhinv धिन्व्, the addition of a अ by dhinvikRNvyor... and its deletion by this rule prevents /guNa, because the /lopa is /sthAnivat.
